Who is Alexander FitzJames?
Alexander Francis Edward FitzJames is a genealogist and author with documented descent from several Scottish royal and noble lines. James I of Scotland is his eighteenth great-grandfather through his daughter, Joan Stewart, Countess of Morton (1428–1493). Robert III of Scotland is both his nineteenth and twentieth great-grandfather through his children James I of Scotland and Mary Stewart. Robert II of Scotland likewise appears twice in his ancestry, as his nineteenth and twentieth great-grandfather through his daughter Egidia Stewart and his son Robert III of Scotland. Through cognatic descent on his paternal line, he is descended from William I “the Lion” of Scotland as his twenty-ninth great-grandfather. His parents are related within the range of fifteenth to twentieth cousins, reflecting the interwoven nature of historic Scottish families.
His ancestry also includes Alexander Irvine, 17th Laird of Drum, who is his eighth great-grandfather. On 11 December 2025, he adopted the surname FitzJames in honour of his maternal grandfather, James Alexander Sim. By a notable coincidence, his full name — Alexander FitzJames — is identical to that of his twenty-fourth great-grandfather on the maternal line, the maternal grandfather of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Angus.
Alexander FitzJames is the author of The Modern Scots Peerage. He is a Member of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (MRi), under the presidency of HRH The Duke of Kent, and a member of the Royal Stuart Society, under the governorship of His Grace, the Duke of St Albans.
He also briefly volunteered as an Alpha Playtester for Electronic Arts on the 2025 release of Skate, contributing to early bug identification and gameplay feedback under a non-disclosure agreement, in accordance with Electronic Arts’ Playtester terms of service.
